Guilty confessions of a juror.

Guilty confessions of a juror.

For the third time in less than ten years I’ve been called in to do my civil duty.

My first time, I was actually chosen to sit on a jury for what ended up being a two day trial. I guess my answers to the judge’s and lawyer’s questions impressed them enough to have the privilege to stay. Interesting experience.... but no crazy drama that would make great stories or make me some kind of jury legend.

My second time I reported for duty, but not chosen. Because of the time spent at the circuit court, I got a check for my precious time. However, the check bounced. You read the correctly.... a State of Illinois check... bounced.  Sigh. My bank actually fined me. After a phone call and some logic they waived the fine. Then came the question, do I approach the State and demand my pay of $18... just out of principle. I came to the determination, that my time and effort is just not worth it. Think of it as a gift to the State of Illinois to help pay off their debt.

The third time is now. But this time instead of needing to go downtown, I get to partake in the Constitutional right of people to have a trial by jury in Skokie (also part of the Circuit Court of Cook County). Though as learned by the video this is a state court and not county court.  After sitting there for 3 hours, the juror room attendant got a phone call from the court room.  Turns out the two parties were able to come to an agreement and no need for a jury trial.  Got paid.  Went to lunch on my hard earned jury pay.

Will this check bounce too?

We’re back, we’re gone.
