Having a sundae on Sunday !
Living in, Montreal, those who have been there, you understand my city if a food mecca. There isn’t anything you cannot have - we have more restaurants per capita then NYC. I tend to have high expectations because of this, and Béla has tried so many culinary experiences during his travels, that some things are hard to beat.
Béla searched for a café in the area and found a place that had really good reviews of their churros. Located on the corner of 19th and Lake, I would describe the street as a one-stop shop for all your needs. Bridal boutiques, nail salon, hardware, tux rental, and all of it with a Mexican flair. Our café was on the corner, a small place, serving their own coffee, showing off their local Mexican pride with many soccer trophies won by different age groups. The staff is friendly, and your churro is prepared fresh on the spot. We decided to try the churro sundae - (it was Sunday, calories don’t count) a Turkish hazelnut coffee and the Madagascar vanilla. The Churro bowl was absolutely divine. Crispy, hot, served with butter pecan ice cream, whip cream - and yes - sprinkles ! The coffee was good, although I would try it black next time, and skip the sugary additions. Highly recommend stopping by, they do not have a website, so going old school and dropping by is the way to go.

A few hours later, we decided - Greek food for dinner. Squabs Gyros is a locally owned little place, in Melrose Park, IL. As soon as you step in, the pictures of Greece, the decor, the smells, all is very inviting. We tried the Gyros plate and the pork souvlaki plate. In proper greek fashion the portions are generous. The meat was perfectly marinated, the tzaziki tasty. We opted for fountain drinks, but they serve beer and other bottled beverages as well. The place must be good, the Chicago boys in blue stopped by for dinner as well - and they were not even in their jurisdiction ! If I had to make an observation, it would be that the salad had too much vinegar, and it then trickled into the rice / pita. They have something on their menu called “Broasted Chicken”. Cooked in a pressure cooker, which the makes it crispy - but not overly greasy…. Definitely to be tasted in the future ! Check out their website.
